Bug Spray Doesn’t Work on Midges

Before midges made their appearance at Jacobs Field Friday night, they had already been feared in Scotlands. The Scots knew what the Yankees didn’t: that bug spray doesn’t work on midges. You need women’s skin cream to combat them.

For years, midges have wreaked havoc on Scotland, though their midges are biting midges and most of ours are not. These pests are not affected by traditional insect repellent. In 2005, the Scottish Royal Marine Commandos found something that worked: Avon’s Skin So Soft body spray.

The female skin care product would have been great for the Yankees. They were certainly having their fragile concentration broken by the insects, and I’m sure they might have had their skin put under distress, too.

Listen to Roger Clemens:

“I think it’s hard enough for our young kids to go out there and concentrate in that situation to have something like that happen. If you got to see it up close on TV, which I happened to see it a half inning on the television, you could really see how annoying it was. And you had to really heighten your concentration through something like that.”

“If it had lasted - it’s easy to say now because it only lasted about 40 minutes. But if you’re in the dugout or watching as a fan there at the game, you really didn’t see. I don’t know how much y’all saw. I don’t watch replays or any of this stuff, but I did see it on TV in close-ups of the guys and it was incredible. Like I said, it was hard enough.”

The midges also affected A-Rod’s batting. He finished the game 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts and is now 0-for-6 in the series. Some call it choking, but the Yankees will probably blame it on the midges. I feel so bad for him.
