Allen Iverson has a new contemporary in speaking ability. Now, I’m not talking about practice here, but I am talking about dogfighting. West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd took the time to let us know just how “barbaric” dogfight… “barbaric” dog… “barbaric” … dogfighting really is. The breaks he took before words–”BARBARIC!” Hmmm, what comes next?–made it seem more like a filibuster than a serious speech. (Serious is used very loosely here.) “Let that word resound from hill to hill and from mountain to mountain,” he said, not channeling MLK half as much as he thought he was. We’ve come a long way since the 60’s, but still not long enough to give African-Americans their fair rights to fight dogs.
His speech was not so much about scoring points as it was at expressing genuine rage at the situation. The delivery is a bit…over the top…but the emotion he is revealing is not just for show.
Much of the tone and pace of his delivery is due to the fact that he has Parkinson’s Disease. Give him a little slack. Most people in America, black or white, think that treating animals this way is indeed, barbaric; not just the PETA freaks.

Byrd’s speech was BARRRRRBARIC!
